Special Projects
GIS Solutions is now developing "School Prefect", a project to digitize school boundary maps for all public high schools within the United States. Once completed, this application will link information including school report card data, financial data, extracurricular activities, athletics and advanced placement courses to school boundary maps. This application and data will be available as an online resource for parents, teachers, and public officials.
There are several components of the project that are currently in progress:
1.) The collection of individual school boundaries for all education organizations (districts, regions, parishes) in all states. From this information, geographical “polygons” are created that represent each school boundary in a digital environment. These polygons are linked to satellite images and road data that provide accurate information as to the size and location of the school, town, and community.
2.) A survey is being sent to high schools throughout the nation that requests information about the athletics, extracurricular clubs and advanced placement courses offered at the school. The survey is gathering information about high schools that cannot be captured by test scores or financial data alone.
3.) Other data sources include public school data available on state education agency websites. This includes school report card data, "No Child Left Behind" data and financial information.
Schools will have online access to digitized versions of attendance boundary maps, and parents and students can find school-specific information just by clicking on a school’s boundary.
